How To Travel India In A Tuk Tuk

The infamous three wheeled transport is something of a living legend in Asia.

Known as a tuk tuk or rickshaw, these machines are the number one taxi vehicle.

They’re bright, they’re colorful, and they’re a must experience once in your life.

Spend enough time with backpackers around South East Asia and you’ll eventually come across people talking about the crazy idea of buying their own tuk tuk and driving it cross country.

For most it ends there, but there are few crazy enough to turn the daydream into a reality.

Buying a Tuk Tuk. Is it legal?

Actually buying a tuk tuk is not easy.

Backpackers are far from the average customer for a Tuk Tuk fabricator.

In most countries including India, it’s not actually legal for a foreigner to own a tuk tuk.

There are lots of permit requirements and insurance requirements for even a local to buy one of these.

You might think that’s the end of that but as you can see, Craig and Aimee did it.

You can too.

Where there is a will there is a way.

While you can’t own a rickshaw, you can purchase it in a local’s name.

This is the same option for land purchases and other vehicles.

It’s actually quite common.

Vietnam is a popular country for backpackers to rent motorcycles and travel the country.

The same sort of rules apply there but no one lets that stop them.

Should you do it?

If you aren’t good with challenges, don’t have the patience for break downs, or feel uncomfortable driving a car in someone else’s name, No you shouldn’t.

If you have a strong sense of adventure, have at least a minimal amount of mechanical awareness, and are excited by the challenge then yes!

You’ll be the stuff of legends mate.

Where to get started?

There are two ways to go about this.

You could get yourself into a rickshaw race like the one put on by the adventurists group.

This is a fun way to experience tuk tuk roadtripping with others doing the same thing.

If you want to go a different route…

If you want to take your own course and travel on your own time, then buying a tuk tuk and going off on your own is the way to go.

For this you need to watch the complete series by Craig and Aimee of Kinging It.

The video above is just the first of the series.

You can find the rest of them on their YouTube Channel.
